I have stayed in Poland for 6 months and my experiences are very bad thus far. I have been lied to, cheated and totally ribbed of my money. And these people do it with a smile. Students i my school get grades by smiling to the teachers and those who do not smile fail. There was a website regarding studies at the Jagellonian University in Poland posted a couple of years ago. And my experience thus far is that I have to atleast some extent agree with the writer as the country really is corrupted and this can clearly be seen in a school life in Poland. In my opinion it is a bit of a suprise that the Poland was ever accepted to EU and then not expelled after blackmailing all that money from the other EU countries 2 years ago.

As an expat living in a foreign country (Japan) I completely understand both the need to vent on apparent differences and the feeling of being judged by everyone around you.
I'm under the impression that all expats, everywhere, feel that the people in the other nation are judgmental because manners are essentially culture- culture that you did not grow up with, culture that you may never completely fit into. Truth is, we are being judged. This happens everywhere.

That being said, I was disappointed that the author would merrily engage in some serious stereotyping despite having suffered under so much stereotyping himself.

Commentors, too- I'm rather sick of being judged because I'm American. Just like the Polish are sick of being judged for being Polish; same for the British. Come on, people.

Brian,

Yes, it is perfectly possible to make a life here. There are tens of thousands of Americans living here, as well as many other nationalities. It's easier in the cities of course, where would you be living?

I recommend my other website Polandian.com for a humorous look at living in Poland and also this post:
http://polandian.home.pl/index.php/2008/03/20/polish-english-forums/
about internet forums for foreigners in Poland.

Lots of Poles speak good English, but certainly not all of them. It's not that hard to pick up some survival Polish, despite what people tell you.
